This video shows a simple way to mine any mineral in Minecraft by creating a vertical shaft to Bedrock.
The best levels (one block = one level) to find each mineral are:
0-4: Bedrock
16-20: Diamond
32-35: Gold
63: Sea Level
64-67: Iron
128-131: Coal
